Repairs

Clock and watch "servicing" can mean a lot of different things depending on who you talk to.  ll too often, it means giving the movement a quick rinse in solvent and a bit of new oil (often both coming out of spray cans!).

To properly service a timepiece the movement needs to be stripped, cleaned, assessed for wear (which should also be corrected!).  Then assembled, correctly oiled, adjusted and timed.

Sadly, a fair proportion of our workload consists of correcting mistakes made by previous repairers.  Over time these have included:

  • Wrong batteries (too thick) fitted so that watchbacks fall off
  • Movements over-oiled so they're swimming in grease
  • Replacement movements that don't fit the case properly, or case-rings and clamps lost giving the same problem
  • Chime and strike-work on clocks poorly adjusted
  • Jewel bearings araldited into place for the sake of a readily available £2 retaining spring

After nearly 2 decades of experience, if it can be done wrong we've probably seen and corrected it!
